Amehoela, a local bar in Rotterdam, required a new website that showcased all the drinks, food menu, and exclusive merch. They already had an existing official website, but they weren't happy with how it looked and functioned. During my internship at Miles, I was assigned to redesign the website with all the mentioned criteria and was responsible for transferring the design files to the developer.
But what exactly were they not happy with? You may now ask. This is precisely the issue. I think it is expected that clients wouldn't be able to pinpoint everything sometimes. But it is therefore, we as designers have the responsibility to find out and identify the problems for the client. In terms of website usability, I looked through the previous website of Amehoela in detail to identify their existing problems. On the other hand, these findings can also help me to be aware of what should be avoided in the design and what can be further iterated.
When I browsed through the social media of Amehoela, it gave me a very open-minded, energetic, funky, and welcoming vibe. The original website was, unfortunately, missing some visual elements to bring this impression to the audience. However, the colors used gave me a great start in ideating the visual design. In this session, I would like to showcase some improvements that I made and the website's style guide.
The below two photos are part of the original website. The graphic elements and content might seem misarranged here, but the vibrant colors and shapes used actually hint at its unique character.

Therefore, I tried to capture these elements and impression and brought them to my ideation. In the below photo, you can see how the graphic elements were being used in header and footer at the end.
Amehoela has a lot of unique drinks and its playful style is one of the attractive point. Therefore, one of the main features we designed for Amehoela is the Cocktail Roulette – if you cannot decide what to drink, you can simply press a button to show you a drink randomly! Therefore, I designed a starting screen for the roulette and the cocktail cards.
Client also requested to add a section to introduce their top of the month cocktail in the Drink page. As this is the content that will be emphasized at the top, I decided to make it look more dynamic by animating the wave shape and headline together.
However, due to the limited budget and timeframe, the design had to be modified into a simpler version. As an alternative, only the top headline is animated and the wave outline will stay as static:
At the moment the bar is updating their content and therefore all the features haven't fully shown in the live website yet. But here, you can take a peak of how it would possibly showcase soon ;)
